<br />
OK since I started doing Ruf Tapes a regular question has been "Are you gonna sell some tapes?"<br />
<br />
It's a good question! I wanted to get a good number of mixes on the blog before doing anything like that but now over a year has passed since I started and so I figure it's time to SELL OUT!<br />
<br />
I'm lucky that <a href="http://www.tapeline.info/" target="_blank">Tapeline</a> is very close to my house so straight from deepest Bredbury comes this C60 full of rare, expensive and unreleased weaponry from the past, present and future... suitable for late drives and night dives, this tape will change your life. Also comes with download code for people who live in the 21st century.<br />

I'm B A C K with more tapes... 1st for the new year is a co-promo for a new dance in Manchester next weekend... I haven't played too many late-night dancefloors in my home town for a while, so I'm buzzing that I have a bi-monthly Saturday residency in the <a href="http://soup-kitchen.co.uk/" target="_blank">Soup Kitchen</a> basement. Each dance is gonna be me plus one special guest playing all night long together... red lights only, DJR mixer, heads down, dress to sweat - DANCERS WANTED...<br />

For our first guest my pal Marcel Vogel is coming across from Amsterdam with a massive bag of very dangerous records. He runs the ultra powerful <a href="http://soundcloud.com/marcelvogel" target="_blank">Lumberjacks In Hell</a> label, has an incredible collection of tunes, knows exactly how to use them for TOTAL IMPACT and is a very happy gentleman indeed.<br />

So this week's tape is straight up pushing the dance... I put a bunch of tunes from Marcel's label on the mix, everything smashed together in a club vibe style... if you are in Manc or even just close on Feb 22 then you really should consider coming to Soup Kitchen... no messin, red lights all night, smoke machine, heavy tunes and lots of smiles... <a href="http://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Manchester/Soup-Kitchen/DANCERS-WANTED-for-Marcel-Vogel-with-Ruf-Dug/12086988/" target="_blank">DANCERS WANTED</a><br />

<br />
There were a few worlds I would escape to in my adolescence and William Gibson's future was one of them. I re-read Neuromancer recently and I still love it so much... quite a darkly humorous book in many ways but what strikes the most is how spot on so much of his predictions were... still waiting for some decent wetware though...<br />
<br />
Every once in a while I get some music and it takes me back to Gibson's world again, be it a dingy bar in Chiba City, or the sensi-fuelled cabin of Maelcum's spaceship, or even the glistening neon abstraction of cyberspace itself.... this mix is a collection of some of those tracks, and of course it begins with the sound of a TV tuned to a dead channel...<br />

<br />
Hey I'm BACK! Been a little bit of a break but I bought a new pack of tapes - we're on Maxell UR something or the other now, feeling the Mad Mike power on each and every tape and so in that spirit I thought first tape could be on a bit of a Detroit electro vibe...<br />
<br />
Some will say the sound never dies but there does seem to be a bit more electro knocking around at the moment... This tape is a collection of some of the stuff that references / elaborates on this vibe... Get out the old 3-in-1, lubricate all your hinges and get ready for a funky shift on the assembly line...<br />

<br />
I fully adore African music. I always try and get a bit in to my DJ sets in one way or another, and certainly pretty much everything I play out is fairly directly informed by the immense variety of tones and rhythms coming from that continent.<br />
<br />
I also have a small collection of music actually directly from Africa as well - it turns up in the 2nd hand shops from time to time, sometimes with exorbitant prices (hi there <a href="http://www.superflyrecords.com/" target="_blank">superfly</a>) and other times you find some bargains. Like the time Reckless Records got a bunch of dusty Kenyan 7 inches in and were knocking them out for a couple of quid each. I bought a bunch (no listening) and boy there's some glorious music on these dirty old records - incredible long jammed grooves that go on forever, holding so much energy and powerful vibes!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKBLGaKXx7hB_mw4rapzzNj8aDsDpY13aLWdMFPEcc1Fy9Bqxd81we133cKYIek6Cuj3s-Mw-oU17R7pBI567iN4nmaZAV23hiWORGR3D9S7vTHE1fg_HcPZTORVtb9iX0bA6DjIyjuH7y/s1600/logo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKBLGaKXx7hB_mw4rapzzNj8aDsDpY13aLWdMFPEcc1Fy9Bqxd81we133cKYIek6Cuj3s-Mw-oU17R7pBI567iN4nmaZAV23hiWORGR3D9S7vTHE1fg_HcPZTORVtb9iX0bA6DjIyjuH7y/s400/logo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Of course, a 10 minute jam and a 7 inch aren't natural pals so often the track is split across both sides, and so I do apologise in advance for the patent-pending "ruffy working the dub siren and echo box while he flips the record" intervals... oh and there's a couple of skips - this treasure is VERY dusty...<br />
<br />
And of course, for those who don't know about it yet, the title of this week's tape is a coarse nod toward what is arguably the finest cassette-based blog out there, <a href="http://www.awesometapes.com/" target="_blank">Awesome Tapes From Africa</a> - get on it now!!!<br />

</div>
OK I'm a lover of the yacht vibe, big time... Jimmy Buffet, life on the open seas, sun always shining, blazing weed and putting lemon in your hair to bleach it, cut-off denim rules the roost. The music is carefree and easy, just like us.<br />
<br />
I'm interested, however, in pushing things a little further out there, seeing what lies beneath all those good times<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.charterworld.com/images/yachts/Andreas%20L%20Motor%20Yacht%20(ex%20Amnesia)%20%20-%20The%20Jacuzzi%20Pool%20By%20Night%20With%20Lighting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.charterworld.com/images/yachts/Andreas%20L%20Motor%20Yacht%20(ex%20Amnesia)%20%20-%20The%20Jacuzzi%20Pool%20By%20Night%20With%20Lighting.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cos the yacht rock vibe is very daytime... the sun is shining and the thing is that's all good but remember in real life these yacht folk are FUCKING LOADED and they are also masters of the universe... mega finance sorts, media barons, aristocrats - powerful people, with some fuckin dark neuroses going on up in those minds, not too difficult to push them into some weird places with just a bit of good gear and the right tunes.</div>
<br />

So you know a day out on the ocean all loggins and messina'ing it up is pretty good vibes but even though you and your fellow party folk have put a sizeable dent into that enormous bowl of really expensive chisel there is still a LOT left and you're at sea and nobody's going anywhere and the sun has set and there's already a hint of wife swapping about to kick off and EVERYBODY is talking absolute bollocks - now THIS is an angle I'm interested in. Let's soundtrack the fuck out of what happens next; cut us out some hollywood lines and lets put a bit of an edge on all this oceanic business... what happens at sea stays at sea... let's just hope nobody's got one of those fuckin speargun things...<br />
<br />
It's about to get weird in paradise.<br />

<br />
And I do sort of agree with that but I can't hate on London for too long or too much because it is FUCKING WICKED!!! It really is. All this Manc cultural cringe is a bit silly really - you can't really compare Manchester and London, they're two very different beasts... London is a megalopolis!!! It's a full blown world city and there are probably only 7 or 8 spots in the world like it, it's a nation state all of its own and it has a fantastic vibe and energy about it. Spend a little time in London and you start to understand the "navel gazing" - it's hard to look beyond the city because it is so engaging... I have a bunch of pals in London and I know I pretty much always have to visit them, to get them to come to Manc takes a LOT of effort because London is such a beast it holds you in with some weird magnet power (this same magnet power also manages to make money piss out of you at all times...)<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Every visit to London is like this</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My London pals often ask if I'll live there and the answer is pretty much no... I love the place and I love the energy but I also like living 2 hours away from it... Manchester does kick it, and for all the frustration that comes from not seeing appropriate recognition for things outside the smoke, the lack of that kind of attention also means that things can just HAPPEN and not really have to interact with the same boring homogenous cultural forces that declare hotness and notness...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">If you don't know where this is I'm not telling you</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Anyway, one thing that's undeniable is that London has a fucking TON of great record shops... and is one of the best places in the UK to go digging. My girlfriend is living down there at the moment so I'm down there a lot and every time I always come back with at least 1 record and usually a lot more. The last trip saw me spend a marathon session in a bargain basement and I got some absolute weapons... this mix is all bounty from my last London dig... 50p classics all the way (except for Billy Who which I got for a quid GET INNNNNN)<br />

Yeaaaaahhhhhh!!! I think I have left it long enough with these tapes now to slam a bit of straight-up self promotion into the stream!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ruf Kutz came about because I had some edits I wanted to press up... originally they were gonna be for a project of my pal Silvio's called ANACONDA EDITS... the cuts had serpent-themed names: "Solid Snake" and "Under The Hood"... some time passed and the Anaconda remained dormant so I thought well I'm gonna do it myself. I had a couple of other edits I liked and so I pressed all four up - by way of continuity the man Silvio designed the Ruf Kutz logo and that was that - RK#1 was born...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just did 250 of the first one I think - distributors weren't interested in talking to me unless I did 500 and no way was I going in that deep financially; sometimes ppl do limited runs cos they don't have much money, not because they are trying to be cool...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hustled a bunch of shops with some copies of the test pressings, used a friend's connect to hook up some Japan distribution (word up JAZZY SPORT!!!!) and pretty much managed to ship out the full 250...</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">RIP Vinyl Junkies. Always smelled dead nice in there as well</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a point of only approaching shops I liked, and as much as possible places where I already shopped - one of the joints I targeted was the now sadly defunct Vinyl Junkies - a grrreat shop and also I knew all the heavy US DJs shopped there when they were in town... this proved to be the fuckin master of all master strokes cos sure enough RK#1 showed up in a Moodymann chart within about 6 weeks and I have basically been dining out on that ever since. (There's a lesson in here for all you budding label bosses and stuff but I cannot be assed spelling it out to you)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway that was 3 and a bit years ago and now we just put out RK#8... the back catalogue is about a 50/50 split of edit-based and completely original material and some of them are worth a few quid on discogs these days...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that's it, here's the mix... 100% Ruf Kutz records... it's the first time I've ever stacked a bunch of RK tunes up against one another exclusively... I quite like that it's certainly not just 45 mins of one straight groove... fair bit of variety in the old discography!!!</div>

Volume 8 was mixed by none other than Woody from the rowdy <a href="http://redlaserrecords.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Red Laser Records</a> crew and so now for Volume 9 we're doing a Ruf Tapes / Full Beam Crunchy Crossover! Beamed direct from the Dane Bank Observatory via Neptune and Longsight!!!<br />

<br />
Yep, I'm spawny enough to be coming to you this time live and direct from Ibiza. This place is VERY special to me and mine; my folks came here on honeymoon in 1970 and loved it - over the years I must have been out a hundred times BUT it might surprise you to hear that in all that time I have hardly been to any of the clubs on the island... been to Privilege once, Space once and that's it. I couldn't even tell you where Pacha is.<br />
<br />
But don't get me wrong. Just like so many other people I had an enormous DJ epiphany out on this island. Holidays where I was out dancing till late every night, pestering the DJ for track IDs, all that tackle.<br />
<br />
Lets go back to 1984 and the Windmill in Cala Llonga<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHpnhh-ZFbhxM0pqkwoAaKivuGu3jaPPShLbwK8Ua8VsUu3ctspo-iPuDyD26WA1-3j-MPaHSHZLCit5BqXAqf7RqUA0LnYI4_RWHcxDZBDuBtOmBpBOV4d7Hjppp36Y3_YdaaMo16Ox3d/s1600/windmill.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="397" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHpnhh-ZFbhxM0pqkwoAaKivuGu3jaPPShLbwK8Ua8VsUu3ctspo-iPuDyD26WA1-3j-MPaHSHZLCit5BqXAqf7RqUA0LnYI4_RWHcxDZBDuBtOmBpBOV4d7Hjppp36Y3_YdaaMo16Ox3d/s400/windmill.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">its still here, it hasnt changed, they dont need to run a bus here these days or any of that shit</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm guessing 1984 because my mind got blown by a 12" of the Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker Jr. What destroyed me was that the other side of the record DIDNT HAVE ANY VOCALS... my first experience with a dub version.<br />
<br />
(For those who are wondering, I was 9 years old)<br />
<br />
The DJ was some text book mobile disc jockey with the lights and the microphone and the 2 turntable console but I had NEVER seen anything like this. Slip cueuing, prefade listening, mother fucking CROSS FADING!!!<br />
<br />
Mum & Dad loved it I think because this DJ basically became a de facto holiday baby sitter for me and my bro (and all the other kids) - if you look at the picture up there the DJ was set up on the patio downstairs with the kiddies and up on the roof where the brolly is, that's where all the parents sat getting shitfaced and eating chips. We were at the Windmill every night... big tunes were Brown Girl In The Ring, D.I.S.C.O., Telstar, Ghostbusters...<br />
<br />
the next year a new guy was on the scene as well, playing jams down at the crazy golf course, his name was George and his DJ Console had a telephone handset instead of headphones... The OG guy was back as well, I preferred his selections... I wish I could remember his name... 1985 was the year of Tarzan Boy, we had a dance and everything...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<object width="320" height="266" class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/_r0n9Dv6XnY/0.jpg"><param name="movie" value="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/_r0n9Dv6XnY&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/_r0n9Dv6XnY&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<br />
By the time Oakenfold and all that lot tipped up to the island and "discovered" Ibiza I was more interested in computer games and laser quest and all that business. But deep down I had been infected. It just took a little while to fester and re-surface and so - FINALLY - we arrive at today's tape!<br />
<br />
Despite everything I just wrote this is not a tribute tape to those sounds of my early childhood but rather a more contemporary, straight up chill tape featuring some fairly ibicenco sounds for a lazy sunny afternoon (I'm deliberately not using the "B" word lest I get into trouble with the authorities for playing kool & the gang)... I hope you don't mind my reminiscing, but this place puts me in a sentimental mood - that's part of the magic of the island!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A couple of weeks ago I made a return visit to play at a fantastic party... <a href="http://www.wearerhythmsection.com/" target="_blank">Rhythm Section</a> in Peckham is one of those rare beasts - a party in London where people go to DANCE! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The people are fuckin wicked - they are an open and knowledgeable and really friendly crowd - lots of smiles and conversations, people of all shapes and sizes and ages and backgrounds AND they know all the words to all the songs... a mob like this is a real honour to play for.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: left;">AND it's in a Pool Club! The very best parties NEVER take place in nightclubs and Rhythm Section is further proof... proper timewarp vibes on entry, outstandingly friendly staff and also a whole bunch of pool tables out the back to add extra vibes - this is a special, special place.</span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pulling the strings is Bradley, known to many as one of the Boiler Room hosts but that's just his day job. All that hanging out with Skream in hotel rooms on youtube is how he puts bread on the table. For kicks he drags his sound system down the road twice a month to a dingy pool club and pumps the most delightful music through it for the rest of the night. He's been doing it since 2009 and I get the sense he's going to be doing it for the rest of his life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This mix is a tribute to that outstanding party and all its lovely dancers. I wanted to try and capture a sense of the night - perhaps the smartest thing that Rhythm Section does is toss the idea of set times out the window - - all the DJs on the night just gang up and go for it all night long, which means you really get to partake in the whole musical flow rather than just going on full destroy mode for 90 mins or something. I made a point of using the same bag of records I took to the night to make this mix; hopefully it might stir a few fond memories in the minds of those who were there...</div>

Not really got much to add except to say that this mix is entirely Theo productions (+ 1 of his edits + a remix he did)... 45 mins is no time at all to showcase all his sounds and so there are a million notable exceptions for every track that's here... turn out the lights, put on your headphones and disappear for a while.</div>

NEVER let it be said that record collecting is an expensive hobby. Well OK that's a big lie isn't it, anyone who's ever dabbled with the black crack will know what I mean.<br />
<br />
BUT<br />
<br />
There are lots of sides to this lifestyle and one of them involves 10p records. There's something special about a 10p record. I don't know how well I can explain it beyond that...<br />
<br />
It's like finding a video game machine that still only costs 10p or something... the price is negligible and so you can just pig out - all you can eat vinyl... I remember when Theo Parrish came to Sydney and they took him record shopping and in one place he dropped like 1000 dollars without missing a beat... anything he saw he just picked up. Imagine being able to behave like that!!! WELL WITH 10p RECORDS YOU GET TO BE LIKE THEO TOO!!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNO1aJ8n8D8uwKx7VdQxA4v1JYdKv_-LtyExeDh3S30u5yCQCDGXz0KRAEC7Ni8_rRV9PYahtLe-YzLeyUsHnWUKZAU4GByeUw6vZ4mS-YBrBSw94XE4Ssuvxch66Ies8XgKH6C0mENeot/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNO1aJ8n8D8uwKx7VdQxA4v1JYdKv_-LtyExeDh3S30u5yCQCDGXz0KRAEC7Ni8_rRV9PYahtLe-YzLeyUsHnWUKZAU4GByeUw6vZ4mS-YBrBSw94XE4Ssuvxch66Ies8XgKH6C0mENeot/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Invariably 10p records are 7 inches, and that immediately puts a LOAD of people right off which we don't give a FUCK about right??? Just means more juice for us... those who were in Q cavern last year saw Tom Noble rock a party for fucking HOURS just playing 7 inches (admittedly some of them were worth a shitload more than 10p but thats not what I'm getting at here)...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3erWAHpo3U1ttilo3fetpD3Dd8kJ41NxZIhqJmK2ZnTd1nB5nFGaXt9AMM78-X9WdFM7hENZ7pUPYQNTxZvu1tq27NfTqDCNDWT5s31KjuScX0XjnnCp5t96R2JbuqKJVsGPPJ0ualxVA/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3erWAHpo3U1ttilo3fetpD3Dd8kJ41NxZIhqJmK2ZnTd1nB5nFGaXt9AMM78-X9WdFM7hENZ7pUPYQNTxZvu1tq27NfTqDCNDWT5s31KjuScX0XjnnCp5t96R2JbuqKJVsGPPJ0ualxVA/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So thats the idea for this tape. It's called £1.40 cos thats how much the records in this mix cost me altogether. How many mp3s does that buy you these days???<br />

Yessssssssssssss 5 o'clock in the goddam morning... it has to be my favourite time to DJ. At 5am all the drunks are gone and the posers are long asleep - the only people left now are the professionals, and they're going nowhere. You don't need to worry about keeping anybody onside or making sure the girls are dancing or any of that shit. At 5am, we're all IN THIS TOGETHER.<br />
<br />
Of course, if you're dancing at 5am then you're not a regular person and most likely you are gonna be a bit OUT THERE in one way or the other. This is why I like DJing so late... you gotta find the distant space where these people are and send out some deep transmissions... sling them a line to grab hold of, let them know we're all IN THIS TOGETHER...<br />
<br />
And - depending on where you are in the world and what time of year it is and whether or not there are windows - if you DJ at 5am there's a very good chance you get to play while the sun rises. And this, my friends, is as good as it gets. It's the crack cocaine of DJing. Once you do your first sunrise you spend the rest of your life chasing the next one.<br />
<br />
So here's the next tape... there aren't many vocals on this one and those few that do exist are pretty twisted... those of you hoping for melodies galore are gonna be disappointed. This one is for your body because you lost your mind a few hours ago, right???<br />
<br />
<br />
SPECIAL ATTENTION TO OUR BERLIN LISTENERS: In many parts of the world, 5a.m. is considered quite late and only the strange and deranged would ordinarily be found dancing at this time. I understand this is hard for you lot to get in your head.<br />

<div>
Soundtracks have been with me for a LONG time, and probably you as well. I bet most people have powerful soundtrack memories that predate any drug shit, any breakup shit, any of that... I can still remember the goosebumps I got the very first time I heard the Indiana Jones theme - I was 9 years old seeing Temple of Doom in the cinema but the very next day I went and rented Raiders JUST SO I COULD HEAR THAT THEME AGAIN</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I could fill tapes upon tapes of soundtrack mixes, I really could. There will definitely be more volumes of "AT THE MOVIES"... this one ended up turning into a bit of a Tangerine Dream-fest which is no bad thing at all... the Dream sound FANTASTIC crunched up onto tape, its sort of like all that coldwave/synthwave shit, but made with real synths and in tune.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 13px;">Essentially this mix is the soundtrack to THIEF with a few other bits thrown in</td></tr>

<div>
Themed mixes are often more notable for their exclusions than what actually made it in, but what really begs attention in this case is the scarcity of vinyl versions of soundtracks for movies made post-1992! Seriously, there were some things I was DYING to stick on this mix but couldn't unless I got some dubplates made up (see <a href="http://ruftapes.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-ruf-tapes.html" target="_blank">the rules</a>)... for example:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Not on vinyl. Somebody bootleg this shit!<br />
Needs a YOUNG MARCO edit!!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Seriously, there is some moolah to be made - those guys <a href="http://www.deathwaltzrecordingcompany.com/" target="_blank">Death Waltz</a> know this and are doing GREAT THINGS... hopefully they will reach beyond the John Carpenter / Italo Horror vibes. Do you know that you can't get the Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack on vinyl except for a fucking well rare Brazil-only promo??? I mean it's only the fucking greatest musical effort by anybody ever in the world... I'm gonna boot it myself dammit but I tell ya if Death Waltz put it out and did a nice job like they've done with everything else they would be MILLIONAIRES and also have the most respect completely.</div>
<div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
PLEASE SOMEBODY PUT THE VANGELIS BLADE RUNNER SOUNDTRACK OUT ON VINYL PLEEEAAASSSSSSEEEEE</div>

<br /></div>
A favourite thing about living in Manchester is <a href="http://www.peacefm.co.uk/" target="_blank">PEACE FM</a>... one of the best radio stations around. Broadcasting out of Hulme it is full community radio vibes all the time... my favourite is Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm when BRUTUS FEELGOOD gets on the wheels of steel and cranks up 2 hours of heavy heavy STREET SOUL... rewinds a plenty, shout outs to all the boys on lockdown in Strangeways and endless plugs for his sunday night session at The Pineapple in Gorton (me and Randy Marsh gonna get a crew together and head down there one week ya know)...<br />

<div>
Anyways this Street Soul sound is something special... Here in Manchester, when Moss Side was having the worst of times, all the crack and the guns and shit, at the parties it was this super sickly sweet music they were listening to... That's a WILD combination.... </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/oseOI2N4wKA?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tammy Payne - "Free" - BIG tune on Gooch Close... crazy...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been getting HEAVILY into Street Soul courtesy of Brutus' show and then digging some of the old Broadway Sound mixtapes from those Moss Side parties... it's an interesting "genre" is Street Soul, it's a bit ambiguous like Balearic but doesn't have the militant beard angle (yet) so you can pretty much call anything you like street soul and nobody will say you're wrong... from what I can discern there are a few key rules:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>sort of 1985 onwards but defo more geared toward 88-93</li>
<li>UK productions mostly... occasional US jam allowed if not too macho (Jellybean is OK)</li>
<li>proto hip-hop beats at all times pretty much, swung if possible. There can never be enough 808 cowbell. It's like the UK New Jack Swing sort of.</li>
<li>VOCALS!!!! Sweet as sugar please</li>
<li>work those ROMplers... synth sax, synth strings, synth piano - no real instruments allowed (apart from loose ends guitar licks - in fact anything Carl McIntosh touches is fine fine fine fiiiiiiiinnnnnneeee)</li>
<li>(most importantly) THESE TRACKS ARE FOR THE LADIES.</li>
</ul>

One of the first days that it snowed I was at home hiding from the cold and thought "why not pop out another mix." Of course, there is a rule that when it is snowing you have to play some deepchord. That decided this mix's theme. I love dubby techno whether it's snowing or not, and it is made for tape!<br />

There is 1 party that stands out from ALL of them. It's in Sydney and it's called <a href="http://www.paradiselost.net.au/">Paradise Lost</a> and I love the guys who put it on and I love their party. It was only when Paradise Lost came into my life that I really REALLY got disco music.<br />

Pictures from the always amazing <a href="http://vintage.au.com/">Angelina</a>... also note that this mix is fuckin a bit ULTRA RAW in one part where the dub siren batteries start fucking up and a big hum appears... I was already on my 2nd life (see the <a href="http://ruftapes.blogspot.co.uk/p/about-ruf-tapes.html">about notes</a>) so we just had to fuckin roll with it. Fortunately I was packing spares<br /><br />
